SCHOLASTIC TRAINING TOURNAMENT #2

A total of 14 scholastic players came to the University of Winnipeg on February 21, 2009 to play in the second scholastic training tournament. When the dust settled, Leah Green emerged victorious with a perfect record of 4 out of 4 points to claim first prize. Second was claimed by Nikho Hizon with a point total of 3.5 out of 4 points and Colin Stranc claimed third prize with a score of 3 out of 4 points. The crosstable is shown below:

BUGHOUSE TOURNAMENT #2

As part of the second training tournament a bughouse tournament was held prior to the chess tournament. A total of four (4) teams entered the bughouse tournament and they were:

1 Colin Stranc and Wayne Einarsson
2. Leah Green and Theo Wolchock
3. Sahika Kumaragamage and Matthew Murphy
4. Justin Villeneuve and Kris Gendzelevich

At the end of the tournament, there was a tie for first place between the team of Colin Stranc/Wayne Einarsson and the team of Sashika Kumaragamage/Matthew Murphy and a tie breaker match was held. At the end of the tie breaker, the team of Colin Stranc and Wayne Einarsson was victorious.

ECOLE SOMERSET SCHOOL WINS 2009 MANITOBA HIGH SCHOOL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS


A total of six (6) teams competed at the University of Winnipeg on February 19, 2009 for the 2009 Manitoba High School Chess Championships. The team Ecole Somerset School from the Prairie Spirit School Division emerged victorious with 19 out of 20 points. This also marks a record for the highest point total in a Manitoba High School Championships as the previous mark was set by the 2008 Kelvin High School team which had 18 points out of 20.

2009 MANITOBA HIGH SCOOL CHESS TOURNAMENT

So far there are seven (7) teams completing for the 2009 Manitoba High School Chess Championships. The teams registered to date are: Vincent Massey 1; Vincent Massey 2; Grey Academy; Acadia; Somerset; Fort Richmond; and Peguis. Come to the University of Winnipeg on February 19, 2009 to see the competition and see which team becomes victorious.

SCHOLASTIC TRAINING TOURNAMENTS

About the Event:

Experts agree that the single best way for junior chess players to improve and deepen their enjoyment of the game of chess IS TO PLAY MORE! Come to our junior chess tournaments on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in Room 3C14 - University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Avenue. All junior players (K-12) are welcome even if they have never played in a tournament before (Players must know how the pieces move, of course). We will be running through the rules of chess for the students, and how a tournament works. The tournament will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 consisting of a four (4) round swiss system tournament. As an added feature a 'bughouse tournament' will be run from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon .Everyone is welcome. This is the perfect opportunity for junior players to gain valuable additional practice before the provincial scholastic championships in March. Tournament Rounds:

Each player will play four games. Games will be time controlled (Each player has 30 minutes for all their moves.) Players are encouraged to record their moves on a score sheet. . Rounds begin at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.

EVERYONE WHO ENTERS WILL GET A PRIZE

Cost: $5.00

Tournament registration: 12:00 noon

Bughouse registration: 10:45 a.m.


This event is sanctioned by the Manitoba Chess Association and will be rated by the Chess and Math Association
