2008 MANITOBA JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

On November 16, 2008 sixteen juniors competed for the right to be the 2008 Manitoba Junior Champion. All the games were hard fought and at the end a tie for first and second occurred between Weixi Lui and Igal Raihman and also a tie for third and fourth occured between Ryne Swift and Leah Green. A five minute sudden death game was played to determine first and second and also third and fourth places. Weixi Lui was victorious over Igal Raihman to claim the 2008 Manitoba Junior Championship and Ryne Swift defeated Leah Green to claim third place. Below is the crosstable for the event.

JUNIOR BUGHOUSE TOURNAMENT

As part of the 2008 Manitoba Junior Chess Championships, a bughouse tournament was held in conjunction with the event during the lunch break. A total of 5 teams competed for the bragging rights of the "Manitoba Junior Bughouse Champions". At the end of the bughouse tournament, when the dust settled, the team comprized of Leah Green and Weixi Lui were victorious. Congratulations to all the teams that took part in the tournament.

MANITOBA JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP goes this Saturday 15 NOV at the U of W

The Premiere Junior Chess Tournament goes this Saturday with the winner getting a paid trip to the nationals in 2009 ! Last year's Winner was top junior Trevor Vincent who had to fight through the highest rated field ever (average rating approx 1750 cfc) to claim first place.This year could be even stronger if many of our best juniors can make it on Saturday . North Dakota Chessnut Scholastic Chess Tournament

Today October 18, 2008, a contingent of chess players from Manitoba traveled to Fargo, North Dakota to play in the 2nd annual Chessnut Tournament. This year, as part of the Annual Chessnut Tournament, an unrated scholastic chess tournament was also held. A total of 33 players participated in the scholastic tournament, of which 8 played in the primary section, 12 in the middle years section and 13 in the high school section. Manitoba was represented in the primary section by Manitoba's own Wayne Einarsson

In the primary section, Zach Bigelow came in first and Blake Pember came in third, while Manitoba's Wayne Einarsson came in second. Also of note, former Manitoban now making his home in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Vahid Fazel played in the middle years section. October 19th regular monthly chess tournament has changed locations

The regular monthly chess tournament on October 19th has changed locations. It will now be at the University of Winnipeg, Lockhart Hall, Room 5L24. Registration is still between 12:15pm and 12:45pm.

Chess Simul at Dalhousie School

Jim and myself went to Dalhousie School today to give a chess simul to the children in the school. Approximately 30 future Manitoba Champions (students) from the school played Jim and myself. All the games were hard fought and a fun time was had by all.

JUNIORS DOMINATE ABE YANOFSKY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

Super junior Trevor Vincent capped off a fine year of chess with a win in the last round against fellow junior Weixi Lui to win the signature chess event in Manitoba. Combined with his win in the Manitoba championship in May and his achieving a master rating along the way , Trevor has got to be considered as the leading candidate for player of the year honors . Of note too ;is junior Aaron Green tying for first place in the U1800 section after a fine performance in the tournament. Congratulations to all the participants ( young and young at heart ) on a fine tournament . note 54 chess players took part ages ranged from 9 to 80 .total prize fund was $4000. Well done Manitoba Chess Association (www.chessmanitoba.com ).

JUNIOR CHESS CAMP PROVIDES BIG FUN AND GREAT LEARNING

The junior chess camp went as scheduled ,the week after the August long weekend ,with 13 juniors ranging in age from 6 to 18 years of age . The top ranked 5 received personal attention and training from International master Dave Ross. While the lower ranked juniors were given instruction , tournament playing experiences , and a movie(Knights of the South Bronx )under the supervision of no less than three chess coaches (!) Good times were had by all .

JUNIOR CHESS CAMP GOES AUGUST 5th - 8th

INTERNATIONAL MASTER DAVE ROSS will again be teaching juniors this summer at the University of Winnipeg .This chess camp is an excellent opportunity for juniors to improve their enjoyment and understanding of the game of chess . My two kids Aaron and Leah have been attending the camp for a number of years and look forward to it again this year!!

The camp is divided into two sections ( intermediate and advanced ) and runs from 09:00 -3:30 each day tuesday to friday the first week after the Aug long weekend .
Open to all Juniors a knowledge of the moves and having played in a tournament or two will be required at registration . SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE !!(as of july 5)

COST : $145 and $185 (advanced section) maximium cost per familly $370 .

PLAY CHESS THIS SUMMER

If you would like to play some chess this summer check out "Chess in the Park" across from Portage Place(between Edmonton and Kennedy st.) each Friday at noon .These are blitz tournaments open to all for free and run by the Manitoba Chess Association . just show up before noon and sign up !

If you want some chess action during the week try stopping by the park on tuesday(11-4) and thursday(11-4) and saturday (12-4)and a local chess expert will set you up with a game or chess lesson if you would like again the cost is free and everyone is welcome .

There is so much to do and so little time to do it !

First off....A big congrats to team Manitoba for that huge showing in Edmonton in May at the Canadian Chess Challenge!

We got silver medal production from Dezhong Kong (grade 3) and Trevor Vincent (grade 12), as well as bronze medal performances from Michael Pang (grade 5) and Weixi Lui(grade 11)
combined with a strong showing from the rest of our team (often against much stronger kids from the other provinces) had Team Manitoba chasing mighty Alberta for fourth spot right until the end when they pulled slightly ahead and we had to settle for fifth place 20 points ahead of Nova Scotia . A GREAT BIG WELL DONE TO NOTRE DAME DE LOURDES SATURDAY 28 June
some 30 players including 20 juniors took part in this well run and organized chess tournament . Three big sections with top rated junior Trevor Vincent winning the top section and juniors Isaac Weibe and Alexander Iomdina winning sections 2&3.

Intense competition at Manitoba Youth Chess Championship 11May

Igal Raihman continued his fine play from the Provincal Chess Challenge to win the MANITOBA Youth Chess Championship ahead of a strong field of 18 players .Igal is quickly establishing himself as one the best juniors in the province and is sure to be a strong contender to the Junior crown currently held by # 1 Manitoba junior: Trevor Vincent.

JUNIORS PLAY CHESS !!

There are still two major chess tournaments for juniors before summer arrives Scholasticchess.mb has their final tournament on May 4th at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth center and the Manitoba Youth Chess Championship (chessmanitoba.mb )goes on the 11th of May at the University of Winnipeg .The winners of the various age groups in the Youth Championship receive free entry into the Canadian Youth Championships ($150).While the winners of the Canadian Championships receive an all expense paid trip to World Youth Championships !!(last year the World Championships were in Turkey ) Remember that they will declare champions in Under 8,U10,U12,U14,U16,U18 ages so you could easily win your age group and then advance up the line to Canadian champ and then World Champ !! Another way for kids to play chess is to play in the junior chess club (for FREE )each saturday until May .chessmanitoba.mb for details. hope to see you out !!

Kelvin High School Wins Championship

Congratulations to Mighty Kelvin who powered to another High School Team Championship. .Trevor Vinvcent, Sultan Ali, Phillip Gregoryaz,and Patrick Serda finished ahead of teams from (2nd place) St. Pauls, (3rd)Vincent Massey, (4th) Kildonan East, (5th)John Taylor, (6th)GlenLawn .
